Seniors' shelter plaza and outdoor space
Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act compliant design was crucial for this outdoor space outside a shelter for unhoused seniors. Forest and Field Landscape Architecture Inc. created comfortable, welcoming areas for resident use and integration with the surrounding community while achieving compliance with the current standards. The work was completed in tandem with architectural renovations to the shelter building by the project lead, WORKSHOP Architecture. Forest and Field Landscape Architecture Inc. presented three multi-phase options to reconfigure the existing and adjacent properties. Phase One in the selected option included street frontage and a sunken back patio. Various seating options, fencing, new trees, a pet relief area, planting, and physical/sound barrier between the busy street and the shelter create a comfortable outdoor gathering space.
