Janet Magee Manor
The renovation of a Toronto Community Housing courtyard at this midtown seniors’ affordable housing site was a complete redesign to improve accessibility, usability, and security. Located adjacent to the Martin Goodman Trail and Mount Pleasant Cemetery, the courtyard now features a new plaza, which was planned, presented to residents, approved, and implemented in 2021.
The plaza includes a retaining wall that serves as a planter and separates the seating area from a walking route that circles the site and leads to a security gate and fence to the adjacent green parkland. Wood board fencing screens neighboring properties, while picket fencing along the trail provides a scenic view and security. A walkway leads to a new shed, accessible community garden beds, and a large gathering table with a pergola. Lush plantings, separated from walkways by a steel edge, deter foot traffic, and colorful perennial planting provides year-round interest.
