Danforth Village Elementary School
Toronto 2015
We designed a playground for an all-kindergarten, Danforth area school. The playground was developed to coordinate with a renovation of the school building. The new school yard combines natural elements such as hardwood log seating edges, new trees, mulch and sand with permeable and colourful beach-themed rubber surfacing for soft free-play and gymnastics. Bright line-painted games energize the existing asphalt, using railway symbols which reference the rail tracks immediately adjacent to the school yard. We tested the specified outdoor musical instruments to ensure a beautiful sound that will fill the space during recess. Rain water is directed to the trees and into the ground before overflowing to the municipal system. The project was constructed in the summer of 2015.
